Immersive storytelling: the future of brand communication

Belén Santa-Olalla

Is a Senior Creative Consultant at Transmedia Storyteller LTD, London.  A graduate of Audiovisual Communication from the Complutense University and holder of a BA in Media Practice and Theory from Sussex University, Brighton, since 2003 she has been working within the field of narrative development as a stage director, lecturer, actress and creativity coach.

img_bele_santa_eng (1)For any brand, the holy grail is engagement, managing to create an impact with your content, to be followed up with creating an emotion in the audience. We understand engagement as having an audience entirely engrossed in the moment, captivated by the story, completely forgetting the real context, transported to a world different from ours.

This engagement is something that storytelling provokes, because we are social beings who understand and learn about the world around us through stories and legends. The stories capture our attention, because their characters are complex creations, and the tales are full of nooks and crannies among which we allow ourselves to get lost. We either love or despise them, but we always feel some kind of identification with them that allows us to project ourselves into the story.

In search of rupture: cubism and digital narrative

Ramón Tarrés

Screenwriter, writer, TV executive producer. Creator of series like "Cuestión de sexo" and screenwriter of other series including “Aquí no hay quien viva" or "Sin Identidad”. Author of the novel “Sin Identidad. El origen”. Collaborator on publishing projects and on audio-visual productions. Researcher of all kinds of narrative expressions, and now, of Digital Narratives.

In the summer of 1910, Picasso and Braque finally solve the issue that they had been working on for several years, which would lead to the creation of a new pictorial language: Cubism.

As his friend and art dealer at the time, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, relates in his book The Road to Cubism El camino hacia el cubismo* (Acantilado, 2013)**, that summer both painters solved the great problem that they had been facing till then, the problem of closed form, that is, the three-dimensional representation of two-dimensional forms on the picture plane. To do this, Picasso and Braque discovered that the way to approach the form to be represented and its situation in space was not as it had been until then, as taught by the heritage of Renaissance painting: start from a supposed foreground and simulate from it, using perspective, an apparent depth. Instead they decided to start with a background and work forward. Construction is thus done as an exercise from inside the picture moving outwards, and where the final destination –unlike in painting as known until then–, it is the viewer who, through the exposed elements, reconstructs the image in his consciousness.

The end of conventional language: welcome, telepathy

Fernando Galindo

Professor and researcher at the School of Communication at the Pontifical University of Salamanca. Focused on the creative management of the information provided by the sensors of a smartphone to generate innovative and effective communication forms and mediums.

img_post_fernando_galindo_eng

I do not think we are aware of what is happening to us yet. We have yet to size up what is going to happen. The other day I came across the interview Gabilondo did with José Luis Cordeiro, a professor at the Singularity University and I had a light bulb moment.

And this, not so much because of the novelty of the ideas introduced by Professor Cordeiro, which ultimately present many of the connections that you end up making yourself once you are familiar with the technologies, but because of the doors he opens in the interview. And from among it all, including our immortality and having to decide (we will see if there is a need to regulate this or not) when to die, what inspires this post is something else: telepathy.

Cordeiro speaks of a third hemisphere in the brain (I think Google is playing with this idea) that would connect the human mind to the cloud via brain waves. Transmission technology via brainwaves is already very advanced, although there is the matter of time needed to refine it. The bandwidth is no longer a negatively influencing factor and the rest is just learning.

Consumption decisions, decisions of change

Alberto Ramos

Communication, my profession. Words, news, websites... gave way to briefs, objectives and marketing. Earlier on, within portals or online media, now with brands at FLUOR Lifestyle as Content and Social Media Director

alberto_ramos_imagen_eng

I have always felt fascinated by how communications technology alters massive consumption, the market, the services and, in part, ourselves. Analyzing why pornography cornered the online market years ago (formats, themes, privacy and payment methods), why we began to plan and book trips (offers, plans and destinations), why today’s music discs (physical)  are for collectors and why we listen to more music (our own or music belonging to the custom lists of others, discoveries and new releases) or why for many shopping is already an activity that takes place through our screens … and it is still not clear to me where changing rooms will fit within a few years  time.

Many of us are amazed at how differently we communicate (voiceless and faceless, but with words) with IRC, Messenger, GoogleTalk… and we cannot explain why we stopped doing it. Or can we? I never imagined that my mother was going to say ‘hello son’ through bits, or that I would prefer live texting from the new instant messaging platform than talking over the phone. And even less that the very same day I could be worn out by WhatsApp group discussions.

The challenge for relevant content in an algorythmical universe

Elena Neira

Graduate of Law and Communication. Expert in communication, social networking, online marketing, technology, market research and publishing.

img_post_eng_elena_neira

A few weeks ago Instagram said goodbye to its chronological feed, which, up to then, had displayed user updates in order of publication. The new model, which is being implemented progressively, employs an algorithmic selection criterion. In practice this means that we will first see the content that the network considers most interesting to us, that is, posts will be chosen based on filters that take into consideration the people that you follow, the nature of the content with which you have the most interaction or the context of the publication.

And Instagram has not been the only one. Shortly before, Twitter, the par excellence real-time network, had decided to sophisticate its “While You Were Away”; feature and launched an algorithmic timeline, which, although activation was voluntary, unleashed a rage in users. #RIPTwitter became a trending topic.
